He shares with the congregation the news of an arrangement reached with the synagogue's Board of Trustees that would promote him to the title of Rabbi Emeritus, effective July 1975, a date that would coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination.  Sadly, Rabbi Malev died just over a month later, on July 14, 1973, of a heart attack."},{"label":"Abstract","value":"This item is part of a collection that is made up of scrapbooks, sermons, and lectures documenting the history of the congregation from the 1940s through the 1980s. Rabbi William S. Malev was born in Russia in 1898, and immigrated to the United States in 1908. He grew up in New York and graduated with a B.A. from the City College of New York in 1919. After entering the rabbinate, he was ordained in 1925. Rabbi Malev moved to Houston in 1946, after the founding of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, where he served as the congregation's first spiritual leader. Rabbi Malev died in Houston on July 14, 1973.
