He was born in Nova Scotia and came to Fort Erie, Upper Canada with the family in 1792. The family then moved to the Head-of-the-Lake on land adjoining Joseph Brant's. In this sparsely settled wilderness the Chisholm brothers learned to speak the Mohawk language. In the 1806 land grant draw John obtained Lot 9 Con 1 SDS. Today (2014) this would be the second lot east of Walker's Line from Dundas Street south to Upper Middle Road. At this time all we know about his participation in the War of 1812 is that he fought at the Battle of Queenston Heights along side his father and two brothers - William and George.
