The eldest son of Samuel and Sarah (nee Burchell), John was born in Bantry Bay, Ireland in 1826 and emigrated with his parents and siblings ca 1836, settling on a Farms and Farming near Waterdown in 1844. John Farms and Farminged at first near his father's property. In 1879 he purchased 100 acres from the Fonger family and built the house at 241 Plains Road East, at what is now Gallagher Avenue. John & Mary's Children and youth were Richard, Samuel, and George Thomas. Mary Jane Simpson Gallagher died in September 1908. Her portait by Cochran was reprinted for distribution to members of her extended family. The versions of this Photograph include this half-length and 12 bust- length oval prints.
