Front row, far right: Joe Bacik.,From Helen Langford's manuscript, \"Growing up in Burlington 1928 - 1947\" (1990): \"MIss Huffman replaced 'Teacher' [Miss Pattison]. She was also a tiny person and had great difficulty managing the 'big boys'! Prior to the Second World War, there were several families who emigrated from Europe to the school area. I remember Peter Sweepe [ Zweep] and Joe Bacik [Baccic] as problems for the teacher; while we thought them heroes -- so bold and daring! Poor Miss Huffman resorted to the strap, often, even for spelling mistakes. She attempted to deliver the strap on Fridays. The boys pulled their hands away and she would miss embarrassingly. She must have had miserable weekends! \" An anonymous former student told his daughter-in-law, many years later, that Miss Huffman had each of her charges fill out a daily sheet wherein they informed her of anything done wrong by any fellow students, and all the sheets were put in a box in the classroom. At the end of the week, the box was opened and all the \"charges\" levied were made known to the schoolChildren and youth. Another anonymous former student recalled embarrassing moments (to him) in Miss Huffman's school, but pointed out mitigating circumstances: \"It should be noted that Miss Huffman came to the school as a brand-new teacher in 1936, just the year before I arrived in Junior First (Grade 1). She was probably no more than 20 or 21 at that time, and all alone she took on a one-room school with about 50 kids in 8 Grades including the usual assortment of con artists and budding criminals. I guess I am not surprised if she used every one of her skills to stay on top of that bunch. Encouraging kids to rat on their classmates was not considered to be politically incorrect in those days as it would be today.\" [Editorial comment by someone who never knew Miss Huffman: in the middle 1930s, it was extremely difficult to get any new teaching position in Ontario. She must have been academically very well qualified. No doubt her earliest students experienced her self-education in how to manage eight classes. She continued to teach at the school until 1942, when Emmanuelle Annette Huffman married Eric Marshall.]"},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Helen (nee Lindley) Langford"},{"label":"Creator","value":"unknown"},{"label":"Date","value":"ca 1936"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1936"},{"label":"Title","value":"S.S. # 14 Nelson, ca 1936"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"S.S. # 14 Nelson, ca 1936","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f929a35c-a1d4-4d84-a473-00efee9306cf/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"S.S. # 14 Nelson, ca 1936","height":1092,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f929a35c-a1d4-4d84-a473-00efee9306cf/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f929a35c-a1d4-4d84-a473-00efee9306cf","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1092,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f929a35c-a1d4-4d84-a473-00efee9306cf/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f929a35c-a1d4-4d84-a473-00efee9306cf/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f929a35c-a1d4-4d84-a473-00efee9306cf/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
