Bought by Reginald Cooper, who retired in 1963; his son Brian Cooper enlarged it. \"Estaminet\" is a French term for a modest cafe or bistro, especially in Flanders and the region of Picardie and northern France. Derived from a Flemish dialect word for a cow's feeding trough (in English called a manger, from the French verb meaning \"to eat\"). The food and ambiance are unpretentious and home-like. Canadian troops would have learned its meaning during the First World War.
