The Estaminet, located on Lakeshore west of Brant Street, was once the residence of Col. In 1919 the house was opened as a restaurant by Mr and Mrs George Byrens. Today it has been greatly enlarged but is still providing the same basic service to the public. From its appearance it was likely a very stately home at one time. It too is endangered by the apartment developers as the area is already zoned for commercial development. Because of its original owner it does hold some historical value, but its location is very poor. The building is only a few feet from Lakeshore Road, one of the busiest streets in town, and parking facilities are on the north side of the street.\" (p. 9),Built in 1843 (?) for Andrew Gage and bought in 1870 by Lieutenant-Colonel William Kerns, a grandson of Nicholas Kerns, the United Empire Loyalist who was the first settler to buy land from Joseph Brant. William Kerns was for 20 years a partner with John Waldie in the General Store at 2021 Lakeshore Road, and then in 1885 bought out his partner. Kerns was the second Reeve of the Village of Burlington and in 1883 was elected to the Provincial Legislature. He died in 1913. However, the Estaminet may not be the former Kerns house, which is said to have been demolished earlier. In 1919 Emma and George Byrens opened the Estaminet Restaurant, which they operated with great success and reputation until 1952, when it was sold to Reginald and Elsie Cooper. When they retired in 1963, their son Brian Cooper enlarged it. The 90 years of popularity of the former Estaminet, now Emma's Back Porch, gives it a strong historical appeal."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Mrs Barbara J.
