Ralph Sr. had emigrated from Yorkshire sometime before 1750 while still a child. In 1765 he married Ann Durham. Ann may have been a Quaker and he may have adopted her pacifist faith on their marriage. This would help to explain his being a 'conscientious neutral' helping both the Rebel and Loyalist during the American Revolutionary War. Ralph Sr. was hung in 1870 for aiding Robert Land, who had been accused of acting as a British dispatch rider during the Revolutionary War. Robert Land escaped to Upper Canada where he became a leader in the settlement of Hamilton. Ralph Sr.'s son-in-law, Elias Long died around the same time and his daughter Catharine (Elias' wife) died soon after, leaving their two small daughters in Ann's care. Sometime after the war, as part of a group of 400 United Empire Loyalists, Ann set off for Upper Canada with at least two of her sons, James Jr. and Ralph, three daughters, a nephew and her two orphaned granddaughters. 1787 found them as settlers on land where the Town of Dundas is today (2014). In 1807, James and his brother Ralph Jr. sold this land and in 1810 they both bought land from Joseph Brant in Brant's Block. He enlisted in the militia on May 9, 1811 and took the oath of loyalty that officers had to take on April 12, 1812. During the War of 1812, James served a total of 135 days. He served from Mar. 22 to Apr. 24, 1813. He was in the Niagara District in Apr. 25 to May 26 and Sept. 9 to Oct. 24, 1813. He worked on Dundas Street from Oct. 25 to Nov. 9, 1813. He served Feb. 10 to 15, 1814 and was at Burlington Heights from July 4 to 23, 1814 where the British military had constructed a fort. The Hamilton Cemetery and Dundurn Castle are located on Burlington Heights today (2014). In 1818, James and his brother Ralph sold their properties in Brant's Block to Joshua Freeman and moved to Michigan. Some family members stayed in Burlington; his youngest sister Nancy married Asahel Davis and his two nieces married two brothers of Asahel Davis."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor, Compiler"},{"label":"Date","value":"2014"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:2014"},{"label":"Title","value":"James Morden (1771 -)"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"James Morden (1771 -)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f63fc912-4b0e-43ee-97f6-11537e088a4a/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"James Morden (1771 -)","height":560,"width":380,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f63fc912-4b0e-43ee-97f6-11537e088a4a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f63fc912-4b0e-43ee-97f6-11537e088a4a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2]}]},"height":560,"width":380},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f63fc912-4b0e-43ee-97f6-11537e088a4a/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f63fc912-4b0e-43ee-97f6-11537e088a4a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/f63fc912-4b0e-43ee-97f6-11537e088a4a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
