Col. Richard Beasley) Burial: UEL: In 1801, John joined his brother William in Aldershot. They built a gristmill on Grindstone Creek in 1809 which grew into a thriving business. The first time the mill burnt down was 21 Jan. 1812. Rebuilt, it burnt again just after the war started. John joined the militia as a Lieutenant. During the war he enlisted in the Battalion of Incorporated Militia under the command of Lt. Col. Richard Beasley. John was at Fort Detroit with Major General Brock. In the Ghent Papers in the Burlington Historical Society Archives there is a recollection about John by his daughter: \"About 1812 father's mill was burnt down, and he went to the war. When he started to Detroit, he said that he either would take General Hull or leave his bones there. He also fought at Queenston Heights. On returning to Flamboro, he missed the iron gudgeons that had belonged to his mill. During the years of absence, a man names Peter had built a small grist mill lower down the stream. Applegarth went down and looked into the mill and presently said to Peters, those are my gudgeons you have got there. Yes, Peters said, they were yours, and made some explanation as to how he became the owner of them.\" He was awarded the General Service Medal for his service at Detroit.
