Window and doorway arches (vaults) were common in the 1840s.\" \"The condition of the building would suggest that this building is more likely an early twentieth-century structure. Nevertheless, demolition of such a beautiful building for high-rise construction, which could very likely happen, would be another architectural loss.\" (p. 15),According to Stanley Blair, this house was built by Edward Williamson for George Allen. The purchase in 1894 of the adjoining lot (now 1385 Ontario) enabled Allen to relocate the older house built on this lot. It was a frame structure, built before 1890, and later clad with brick. The brickwork appears to date from 1905, after the house was relocated to its present site to make room for the construction of George Allen's new brick house. The 1 March 1905 Gazette Documented that \" Men are at work excavating the cellar for Mr Geo. Allen's house which he is removing from the present site to the old cooperage lot.\" The 30 August 1905 Gazette Documented that \"work on Geo. Allen's new brick house on Ontario St. [was] being rushed - Henry Graham [was] doing the brickwork.\" George Allen, born in Wellington Square in 1843, was the fourth son of Robert Allen & Jane Smyth, who emigrated in 1837 with other members of the Allen family from County Tyrone, Ireland. George Allen began as a tinsmith, then opened a successful hardware business at the corner of Brant and Pine Streets (demolished in 1993.) He carried a large stock of stoves and manufactured crimped stovepipe elbows, which he shipped throughout Canada. In 1867 he also opened a coal and wood business on John Street, which he later sold to Phil. Patriarche. In 1901 he sold the stove business to his nephew, James S. Allen, retaining the hardware and fuel businesses. He served on the village council and was Reeve from 1906 to 1908."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Mrs Barbara J.
