A year later Benjamin left New Jersey to join others of his wife's family in the Upper Canada settlement called The Forty (now Grimsby, 2014). He hoped to find land near them and then return to get is family. Before he could return his wife and Children and youth arrived at The Forty. Nathaniel had a keen interest in medicine. As soon as he was old enough he began to study medicine under Dr. Cyrus Sumner of Beamsville. As the threat of war increased, Nathaniel was called into service as assistant surgeon to Dr. Robert Kerr serving in the 4th Lincoln Regiment. In the record of his war service is the following quote, \"Taken prisoner by the enemy July 25, 1814. Wounded by the enemy at Schlosser while a prisoner of war, trying to effect his escape July 26, 1814. Returned as a prisoner of war, held at Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1814.\" He was shot in the leg and although he recovered from the wound he suffered from ill-effects the rest of his life. He received a pension of 48 pounds for his war service. After the war he acquired 200 acres on Dundas Street - Lot4 Con 1 SDS (between Appleby Line and Burloak; 2014) Here he Farms and Farminged as well as having a very active rural medical practice in Halton Township and stretching as far as Hamilton and Guelph. The Upper Canada medical Board came into existence late in Nov. 1818. Dr. Bell applied for certification and received his papers in April 1819 - the first person in Halton; the second person in Upper Canada. His service to the military was ongoing. He served as surgeon to the 2nd Gore Militia Regiment and during the 1837 Rebellion as surgeon to the 8th Gore Militia. Although Dr. Bell was not a resident of Burlington during the war, he was involved in the care of soldiers from Burlington and is recognized here for that service.
