William Applegarth settled in 1791 on this land on the north shore of the bay, east of what is now La Salle Park Road. Applegarth is credited with renaming Burlington Plains as Aldershot. The Oaklands estate became one of Hamilton's most popular picnic grounds. In 1889 the house and 27 acres overlooking the bay were sold at auction to T. B. Townsend, who later bought the entire property.
