Others present included Henry Stanley, Halton County Agricultural Representative; the Honourable George Kerr, Halton MPP and Frank Thompson, \"who had come up with the idea of a historical plaque to honor the county.\" (Burlington Post, 4 October 1972),The plaque tells the history of Halton which was formed in 1816 as an electoral and militia district. The county was named after Major William Halton, secretary to Francis Gore, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. Independence and full municipal and judicial powers were granted to Halton County on 1 January 1855. The county then consisted of the townships of Esquesing, Trafalgar, Nelson and Nassagaweya. New municipalities incorporated within the county were Milton and Oakville in 1857, Georgetown in 1865, Burlington in 1873, Acton in 1874 and Bronte in 1951.
