In 1807 his family relocated to Nelson Township to be closer to Phoebe's parents and siblings who had moved to the Hamilton area. Clement was a ship builder and probably continued this trade while his sons cleared the land on the lakeshore near Walker's Line for a Farms and Farming. All males between the ages of 16 and 60 were expected to serve in the militia. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, at the age of 16, Stephen was not selected for service in a flank company. He was on duty as a private from Oct. 17 to Nov. 17, 1812 then he joined the artillery. He served again in May and October 1813 and was off sick in July 1814. He served a total of 69 days. According to his obituary, he was converted at a meeting in 1828, and moved to Oakville in 1858. He died 25 Aug. 1859 in his 65th year; survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. \"Converted\" in this context, means publicly declaring his intention to participate in the Methodist faith.
