He married Betsy Broughton (1841 - 1918) in 1867. Their 7 Children and youth also stayed in England, except for Edwin James Jr, who emigrated to Hamilton in 1906. He married Ethel Gallagher, a cousin of Annie Whatmough's husband, George T. Gallagher. Ada F. (1879 - 1962) remained unmarried. Her father's role as librarian at the Co-op Library was passed on to her.
