According to From Pathway to Skyway Revisited, p. 161, \"in 1916, Wilson dealt in flour, feed and grain at Pine and John Streets\". The 1918 Telephone Directory lists R. H. ARCHITECTURE: Two two-storey flat-roofed brick veneer structures. The original windows are segmental with brick voussoirs and stone sills; the windows at 408 are smaller than those at 404. The lower elevations have been altered. Are there old photographs? ENVIRONMENT: At the corner of Pine and John, south of the new Wellington Square development. The ground floor is raised up above the sidewalk level. USABILITY: Commercial use. The Downtown Urban Design & Building Improvement Study (1989) makes suggestions for the improvement of the facade (p. 165). However, the \"greater intervention\" recommended there may be inadequate. A 1990s-style renovation might involve more attention to the rear elevation. Renovated entrances from an inner courtyard or patio space might be more appealing to shoppers than having to walk along the somewhat stark John Street sidewalk and then to climb stairs. The possibility of a courtyard link with the Lakeshore Bakeries might be explored. INTEGRITY: The brick has beeen painted. The windows have been altered without much design sensitivity. Cloth awnings added to various windows. NOTE: According to BHS records, coal was shipped from Rochester, NY, to a wharf at the foot of John Street until the Radial Line tracks were put in; then coal cars were left at the Brant Inn area and coal was shunted by radial freight to the John Street siding, and down John Street to the Patriarche coal yard and the Kerns Store. The last train ran in 1928. There was a lane half-way between Lakeshore and Pine Street, running from John to Elizabeth Street. 399 John Street was a frame building underneath a later surface. The title search summary for that building is as follows: sold in 1878 by Peter Redpath to George Allen, hardware merchant and coal dealer, who later sold to Philip Charles Patriarche, coal merchant. The Milne building was built in the 1930s."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor"},{"label":"Date","value":"1910"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1910"},{"label":"Title","value":"404 John Street, Burlington, ON"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"404 John Street, Burlington, ON","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/eed46548-bdf0-48fd-80ed-0e7befc78ccf/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"404 John Street, Burlington, ON","height":1064,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/eed46548-bdf0-48fd-80ed-0e7befc78ccf/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/eed46548-bdf0-48fd-80ed-0e7befc78ccf","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1064,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/eed46548-bdf0-48fd-80ed-0e7befc78ccf/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/eed46548-bdf0-48fd-80ed-0e7befc78ccf/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/eed46548-bdf0-48fd-80ed-0e7befc78ccf/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
