Walter Gage (Plan 117), but most of the development in this plan occurred after the installation of water mains and sewers in 1910. In April 1910 Lot 63 and other property was bought by George Allen. In October 1911 Part Lots 63 and 64 were sold to Charles Andrew Klainka, who built the house in 1912 and sold it in January 1913 to Agnes Wheeler, widow. Her daughter, Bessie Terryberry, was a dressmaker. When she owned it, the house was known as \"the brown house\"; she also ran a boarding house. Ed McMunn boarded here as a young man. [ also Harry Samson ??] 2 August 1910 Gazette: Mr Chas. Klainka, foreman in A. S. Nicholson's planing mill, had a narrow escape from a very serious accident on Saturday last. He was engaged sawing a board, when a piece broke off, hit against the saw, flew off and struck him on the hand and stomach, knocking him senseless to the floor. He recovered in about ten minutes, and after having his injured hand dressed, was able to go home. Charles Klainka (pronounced Klankey) was a foreman at Nicholson's Planing Mill. An accidental injury there in August 1910 perhaps convinced him to retire from the planing mill, for he soon afterwards became operator of the Ford Garage at the corner of Locust and Water Streets. He also had a large car repair shop on Pine Street. He built several houses on speculation, including two on Hurd Street (514 and 518?) and one at 255 Guelph Line. The Klainka family are longtime residents in Burlington. One Klainka had a tailor shop in Highville; another in the 1930s and 1940s had the garbage collection contract for the Beach Strip. 4 January 1913 Spectator \"Burlington Briefs / Interesting News Budget From the Pretty Lakeside Town\": All the time there is something doing in the real estate business in Burlington. The latest is the sale of the bungalow of Charles Klainka, of Rochester, which has been advertised in the Spectator for the past two weeks, and which J. S. Boothman has sold to Mrs. Wheeler, of Port Nelson, for a good round sum. There is hardly a day without some deal being closed here. 1915 Voters List: Agnes Wheeler, Widow, and Bessie Terreberry [sic], Spinster, 63 Burlington 1916 Sewerage Works Plan: owned by Mrs Wheeler. 1919 Voters List: Agnes Wheeler, widow, and Bessie Terryberry, dressmaker, at 63, 64 Burlington Avenue. 1924 GOAD Map: 51 Burlington 1927 Voters List: Mrs A. Turcotte: Burlington: The Growing Years, pp. 83, 85. ARCHITECTURE: A one-and-a-half storey frame bungalow built in a vernacular Craftsman style, somewhat influenced by the grander Craftsman-style villa built two or three years earlier, next door at 534 Burlington Avenue (designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1992). The wood, including the windows and cross-cut clapboard siding, probably came from Nicholson's Planing Mill. The roof flares out over wide eaves, and this curving flare is echoed in the lower boards of the front verandah. The posts supporting the roof over the full front verandah are clad with clapboard siding. The front elevation is eccentric but balanced, with a projecting bay window on one side of the central door. The sash winodws at the front and side elevations have a Craftsman-style detailing of three-over-one in the upper sash, and a single pane lower sash. The large side and rear gables are clad with cedar shingles, which originally also covered the roof. The foundation is an unusual combination of rubblestone below grade and red brick above grade. ENVIRONMENT: The property contributes to the eclectic heritage character of Burlington Avenue. The Red Ash on City property at the front of the house is an Honour Roll tree. USABILITY: Renovated for contemporary use. The garage off the rear lane (not original - not shown in the 1924 map) was demolished in the 1970s and a side driveway installed, off Burlington Avenue. INTEGRITY: The house remained relatively unchanged until 1975. The cedar roof shingles were then replaced with asphalt shingles and eavestroughs installed. It is thought that wider wooden eaves troughs at one time continued the curved flare of the roofline. The clapboards had originally been stained a dark brown, with the trim painted a white or creamy yellow, reminiscent of Muskoka cottages and the cottages built by W.D. Flatt in the vernacular Craftsman style. The clapboard was painted for the first time in the 1970s. The bricks of the foundation and chimeys were also painted. The second-level windows were replaced with inferior sliders and combination storm-and-screen thermal windows. The present owner has replaced the rotted clapboards and supports of the verandah, replaced the sunporch door, and added wooden storm windows to the rear sunporch and basement windows. The kitchen chimney has been removed to roof level and skylights installed. Eave-and-ridge ventilation has been installed in the roof. Some 25 cracked panes of glass have been replaced with modern (non-ripply) glass. The wood screen door is a modern replica. Present maintenance concerns include the cedar shingles on the rear (west-facing) gable, the replacement asphalt shingle roof, and spalling on the brick foundation. The present owner intends to replace the modern replacement second-level windows with replicated wood sash and casement windows. Original interior features include the original dark stained wood trim in the dining room (including the bay window seat), the sitting room (including the mantelpiece and tiled fireplace) and the hall (including two sets of double French doors). The stained fir floors on the first level are restored."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor"},{"label":"Date","value":"1910"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1910"},{"label":"Title","value":"526 Burlington Avenue, Burlington, ON"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"526 Burlington Avenue, Burlington, ON","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ec68aec3-040b-4e49-96fe-4539a02ededd/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"526 Burlington Avenue, Burlington, ON","height":1064,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ec68aec3-040b-4e49-96fe-4539a02ededd/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ec68aec3-040b-4e49-96fe-4539a02ededd","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1064,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ec68aec3-040b-4e49-96fe-4539a02ededd/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ec68aec3-040b-4e49-96fe-4539a02ededd/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ec68aec3-040b-4e49-96fe-4539a02ededd/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
