Norton Bus Lines Ltd. In 1936 the Cecil Norton family lived on Dundas Street, one-and-a-quarter miles west of Palermo; their son Grant was ready to attend Burlington Central High School, but there was no public transportation. Cecil Norton bought a seven-passenger Pierce-Arrow limousine in which he drove his son and up to twelve other passengers, who were asked to pay $3 per month if they could afford it. In 1946, an old surplus army chassis was fitted with a bus body to carry more students; in the following year, the school board began to pay for bus service, and the Nortons purchased their first real bus, a Reo. The bus line was sold to Travelways and then to Laidlaw Transit. Cecil's grandson Alan Norton is now vice-president of the company's western region and supervises 680 routes with 68,000 student passengers. An elementary school opened in 1991 on Cleaver Avenue in Headon Forest is named the C.H. Norton School. The family home, now more than 150 years old, had a room upstairs with no windows, reached by a trap door. Turcotte, Burlington: The Growing Years, pp. 138 - 143.
