The car parked in front is a 1960 Oldsmobile.,The laundry was owned and operated by the King family. Gwelda (nee Garnham) Fontaine, \"Reflections\", The Burlington Post, 11 February 1981: \"There was an alley between the Sherwood Hotel and the next double frame... building ... painted a buff colour.... In the south-side portion ... Mr King operated a Chinese hand laundry. It was the fashionable thing to have your laundry done my hand. ... Business men did not rely on their wives to hand-finish their shirts. They sent them out. I think it cost about 12 cents each to have them done.... Mr King was a tall, strong very affable man. Mrs King was small and quite oriental in her mannerisms. They were very congenial and polite people. Mr King's earning power could not have been all that great, but each year he managed to bring a child from China. It was my pleasure to make the acquaintance of Geraldine KIng. She and I attended Burlington Public School together. Her brilliance was amazing. She was a straight 'A' student. ... I can remember Mr Lockhart asking ... \"When is a man famous?\". The class was silent for a few moments, then Geraldine raised her hand and said \"after he is dead\". Mr Lockhart ... was very pleased with this reply and explained it was the correct answer. This little memory has stayed with me. It seemed each year a new little member joined the King family. I am not sure if it was their own Children and youth or just Children and youth they brought from China. There was Lily ... about eight years old, then two smaller boys -- both younger. On the north side of the building was Mr Waumsley's shoe repair. He was a very tall man with a dark, ruddy complexion and very strong. He had a shock of dark curly hair. I used to watch in amazement as he filled his mouth full of shoe tacks andremoved them singly as he worked on his shoe last tacking on a sole or heel. I marvelled that he never swallowed any. He had a lovely wife Florence ... industrious, always pleasant and cheerful. Latterly they moved from that location and then he became the superintendent of the Joseph Brant Museum.,43.3256,-79.7982"},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Frank Armstrong"},{"label":"Creator","value":"unknown"},{"label":"Date","value":"Feb-62"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1962"},{"label":"Title","value":"Chinese Laundry and First-Class Shoe Repair, 406 and 408 Brant Street, 1962"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Chinese Laundry and First-Class Shoe Repair, 406 and 408 Brant Street, 1962","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ea7f5a82-17fe-41c1-b2db-758e8e8c7aa3/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Chinese Laundry and First-Class Shoe Repair, 406 and 408 Brant Street, 1962","height":1110,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ea7f5a82-17fe-41c1-b2db-758e8e8c7aa3/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ea7f5a82-17fe-41c1-b2db-758e8e8c7aa3","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1110,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ea7f5a82-17fe-41c1-b2db-758e8e8c7aa3/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ea7f5a82-17fe-41c1-b2db-758e8e8c7aa3/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ea7f5a82-17fe-41c1-b2db-758e8e8c7aa3/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
