Until Limestone Hall was built in 1853, he and his wife and family - 10 Children and youth in the 1851 census, aged 17, 16, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8, 6, 3, and 1 - lived in the small house which forms the rear part of Limestone Hall. John was an eminently successful famer, with a wide range of grains and livestock on his 307 acres. In the 1871 census, John (aged 60) and his wife Phoebe Zimmerman (59) had eight of their Children and youth (aged 17 to 34) still living at home.
