In 1809 he was granted by the Crown Lot 22 Con 1 NDS (on the north side of Dundas Street, second lot east of Brant St.) When war was declared in 1812, at age 27, he was not selected for service in a flank company. He served 1 week in regular militia duty in October 1812, from Oct 17 to 24. The week following he was recorded as \"deserted\"(\"deserted\" as in \"absent without permission\" not as in\"deserted to enemy) - gone till Nov. 24th. In 1814 he was on duty from July 4 to Aug. 10 at Burlington Heights where the British Military had decided to build a fort.
