Ontario, to William and Margaret Smith. The Smith family moved to Lowville. Martha was employed as seamstress at the James Roderick Hotel and Post Office on Waterdown Road, just east of the Aldershot Railway Station. While employed there she met Robert L. Cutter, a tenant on the same property. Martha is said to have also worked in Dundurn Castle, Hamilton, as a seamstress. William and Elizabeth Smith are each listed in Morrey's Business Directory - Halton, Waterloo and Wellington, (Ingersoll: Union Publishing Co., 1896), page 172, as living in Burlington, freeholders of a village block Lot.
