A projecting bay window at one side lights the stairs. A replacement front bay window was added in 1994.,Built in 1909 by George Allen and advertised in the Gazette: \"For Sale. This new brick house, seven rooms; furnace, wired for electric lights; hard and soft water; fine lot, with fruit trees; centrally located. Liberal Terms to suit purchasers. Apply to GEO. ALLEN\". Sold in June 1909 (with Allen taking up the mortgage) to Esther Ann (nee Smith) Gilbert (1860 - 1935) and William Richard Gilbert (1847 - 1923), a customs broker. The Gilberts moved to Burlington from Welland in 1900 and lived at 505 Hager Avenue until this house was finished. 30 June 1909 Gazette: \"Mr W. R. Gilbert has purchased Mr Geo. Allen's new brick house on Burlington avenue, and is moving into same next week.\" William Richard Gilbert was Stationmaster for the Downtown Burlington station of the Hamilton & Northwestern Railway / Grand Trunk RR line. He was also a customs broker. He was the youngest of 7 Children and youth born to Richard Henry Gilbert and his wife Grace, who had emigrated from Devonshire, England, to Canada West, and ca 1842 had settled at Smokey Hollow on Grindstone Creek in Waterdown, where Richard was one of several millers. When Grace died at age 31, the family moved to New Hamburg. Six of the nine Children and youth born to Esther and William Gilbert survived to adulthood: Victor, William, Mary, Nora, Esther, and Alice, who married John T. (Jack) Kirby in Feb 1922. They were the parents of Mary (nee Kirby) Robson. Nora became a Bell telephone operator by day and the Hamilton Spectator's Burlington correspondent by night, covering fire department calls, council meetings and local events. She also reviewed books and wrote articles on Burlington's history. Her career as a newspaper woman, extended over 30 years -- for the Hamilton Herald, the Globe & Mail, the Toronto Star, and the Hamilton Spectator, whose staff she joined in 1942. This property stayed in the Gilbert family until 1958. The Gilbert family were staunch members of St Luke's Church, contributing a memorial credence table for the communion bread and wine. The original horse barn and carriage shed still stands at the reear of the property, by the back lane.
