He was born in 1786 on the St. John's River, New Brunswick. In 1807, his family relocated to Nelson Township to be closer to Phoebe's parents and siblings who had moved to the Hamilton area. His father Clement was a ship builder and probably continued this trade while his sons cleared land on the lakeshore near Walker's Line for a Farms and Farming. During the War of 1812, Robert served in the 5th Lincoln Regiment in the 2nd Flank Company. He was at the attack on Fort Detroit in August 1812. After the war, he made a land claim as a member of the 2nd Flank Company. In 1828 he served again as a private in the militia.
