He was born on 4 May 1800 on the St. John's River, New Brunswick. In 1807, his family relocated to Nelson Township to be closer to Phoebe's parents and siblings who had moved to the Hamilton area. They Farms and Farminged on the lakeshore near Walker's Line. During the War of 1812, some British soldiers came to the Lucas' home when just John and his older (by 2 years) sister, Rebecca were at home. He approached the soldiers asking what they wanted. The Children and youth supplied what was asked for - some bread and milk. John soon found some leather of his father's was missing. The soldiers denied having it, but John jumped into their boat and retrieved the leather from under some stolen cabbages.
