Note the crumpled propeller, the only serious damage to the plane.,I was returning to base after an hour and half of practice manoeuvers when the engine caught fire and started belching smoke at 5,000 feet. My vision was obscured by engine oil that sprayed the windshield. I pulled the fire extinguisher attached to the engine and managed to keep my nerve. I was able to bring the aircraft to a smooth belly-landing in a soggy field near a little place called Shower's Corners in Blenheim Township south-west of London.
