The property was purchased from Ephraim Burns. Jack returned from overseas after the First World War and was employed as a notary public and liaison officer between patients and the Federal Government at the Brant Military Hospital, until it closed. He leased the Cities Service gas station in Westdale for 16 years while honing his skills as artist, etcher and printmaker in the rear room of the station.
