After a \"... miniature in possession of the Gillespie family, of Montreal, Que.\" (JRR Catalogue) J. Ross Robertson's search for this portrait is described in his \"Hunting for Pictures\", Toronto, 1900, pp. 17-19. This bust portrait is similar to another watercolour in the J. Ross Robertson collection in the Baldwin Room, which shows Dr Kerr seated in a chair at a writing table, pen in hand, and wearing a gold-fringed Masonic apron. In 1995 Charles G. Roland presented evidence that this latter portrait was painted in 1794 by artist William von Moll Berczy (1748 - 1813) in Newark (later Niagara-on-the Lake.) It was Kerr who arranged for Joseph Brant to sit for Berczy; that famous portrait (now in the National Gallery of Canada) was completed ca 1807. (CBMH/BCHM / Volume 12: 1995 / p. 187-94) \"Kerr had been a Mason since his initiation in 1790 at Quebec. From 1797 until 1802 he was Provincial Deputy Grand Master. Later, Kerr was Provincial Grand Master of the Schismatic Grand Lodge. The gold-fringed apron Kerr is wearing in his portrait signifies that the wearer is a grand lodge officer, and the fact that the portrait does not show Kerr with a collar indicates that he was not yet Deputy Grand Master .Thus ... the portrait was painted before 1797, the year he became Deputy Grand Master.\" -- Roland. Robert Kerr (1755?-1824), military surgeon, in Freemasonry was Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge, Niagara, 1807-20. He married Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Sir William Johnson and Mary Brant (\"Molly\", sister of Joseph Brant). His son William Johnson Kerr married Elizabeth Brant, daughter of Joseph [Thayendanegea], thus strengthening the ties of the Kerrs with that prominent Mohawk family."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Gift of J.
