(Compare the note on 401 Brant Street with the title summary in the 1976 newspaper article.) It may have been built circa 1916 for Edward Dickenson; in 1923 it was in use as an ice house for Dickenson's dairy and ice-cream parlor. The 1924 Goad Map shows a two-storey general storage structure of hollow clay tile, with an ice-cream and candy factory at the rear of the building: 66 John Street, numbered at the rear (formerly 30). Cam Johnston bought the Dickenson candy business. In 1948 the Brant Street structure was sold to William Watson, a jeweller. In 1947 the John Street property was sold to Sam and Robert Imber; Bob Imber operated his plumbing business here until 1975. In 1976, Bosley Real Estate opened here (see the newspaper article). Albert Schmid, the great-great-great-grandson of Franz Josef Schmid, who began the family watchmaking business in Riedenburg, near Munich, in 1845, emigrated to Burlington in 1958. He and his brother Rodney both worked for Watson's Jewellers on Brant Street before setting up their own businesses - Rodney in Ingersoll, Ontario, and Albert on John Street. In 1995 he purchased this property and renovated it in a style reminiscent of that in the town of Reidenburg. (See the 1995 Burlington Journal article.) ARCHITECTURE: The tall one-and-a-half-storey front-gabled structure is built of hollow clay tile, with a concrete basement. The ceilings are very high, perhaps because the structure was built for storage. There is a stilted dormer at the side for raising supplies to the second floor. ENVIRONMENT: Located next to the City parking lot and the Downtown Farms and Farmingers market., this is a notable downtonw landmark. USABILITY: Adapted for combined commercial and residential use in a commercial zone. INTEGRITY: The clay tile seen in the 1920s photograph has been stuccoed.The Downtown Urban Design & Building Improvement Study (1989) commented, \"This tall, narrow building has the potential to be a striking landmark\" (p. 163). The property owners then followed one of the suggested facade improvements, with a new classical revival treatment on the front entrance and an arched upper window. The 1995 facade, designed by John Williams, won a Heritage Award for renovations in 1996."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor"},{"label":"Date","value":"1910"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1910"},{"label":"Title","value":"444 John Street, Burlington, ON"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"444 John Street, Burlington, ON","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/d3c289eb-780c-4ab6-b287-65ee1b68762b/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"444 John Street, Burlington, ON","height":722,"width":480,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/d3c289eb-780c-4ab6-b287-65ee1b68762b/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/d3c289eb-780c-4ab6-b287-65ee1b68762b","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2]}]},"height":722,"width":480},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/d3c289eb-780c-4ab6-b287-65ee1b68762b/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/d3c289eb-780c-4ab6-b287-65ee1b68762b/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/d3c289eb-780c-4ab6-b287-65ee1b68762b/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
