Hurd of Hamilton. The Hurd family papers are in the Joseph Brant Museum archives. Plan 70, the Village of Burlington Survey Plan, was registered by H. H. Hurd in 1878. Lots 16 and 17 were sold by Hiram Hurd & his wife Ophelia in 1880 (registered in 1881) to George Blair, the builder. 1909 Polling List: Charles Freeman, age 58 [Esquire or Engineer?], Locust & Caroline, Lot 6 In 1913 (registered in 1914) to Edwin Black Freeman. The 1915 Voters List includes Tracey Freeman, Lot 16, Caroline, but the line is crossed out. (In the 1919 Voters List, Tracey Freeman and E. B. Freeman are listed at 10 Hagar, at what is now 505 Hager. ) 1916 Sewerage Works Plan: property owned by Edward Freeman. In 1921 Freeman sold part of Lots 16 and 17 to Eliza Springer, married woman. (The house on 539 Locust was built after 1924 for her husband O. T. Springer, who died before the house was completed.) In 1940 this parcel passed from Freeman's estate to the Corporation of the City of Burlington, and then to Ernest Herbert Alston, for whom this house was probably built.
