This is the same building photographed ca 1900 when it was owned by William Cannom.,A map in the 1877 Halton atlas shows that the property where the store was located belonged to \"Cummins and Duffes grain dealers\". Alexander Duffes married Lucinda Hannah Cummins. a daughter of Titus Geer Cummins, who founded Cumminsville and was a local J. P. and grain dealer. Titus G. Cummins and his wives Ann & Margaret Will were buried in the Union Burial Ground Loyalist Cemetery . Duffes was born ca 1840 in the USA, the son of a Scottish born plasterer John Duffes, who was listed in the Nelson Census of 1861, 1871 and 1881. In 1881 Alex. (also called Sandy ) left Freeman and was gone 4 or 5 years before the family heard from him. In 1885 he filed on a homestead in Idaho, which became the site of a town called Nampa. He was called the \"Father of Nampa\". He sent for his brother, Jim, and sister, Margaret, to join him in Idaho. Another sister, Helen (Nell), stayed in Hamilton. In Idaho Alex. and Jim worked as carpenters and plasterers.
