Middlesex County UEL: Son of a loyalist Thomas is the eldest son of Clement and Phoebe Lucas. He was born in 1785 on the St. John's River in New Brunswick. In 1807 his family relocated to Nelson Township to be closer to Phoebe's parents and siblings who had moved to the Hamilton area. His father was a ship builder and he probably continued this trade while his sons cleared land on the lakeshore at Walker's Line for a Farms and Farming. He enlisted in the militia May 11, 1811 with the rank of Ensign in the 2nd York Regiment. On April 4, 1812, when he took an oath of loyalty that officers had to take, it was as Thomas Lewis. He served from Oct. 17 to Dec. 19, 1812. He served from Mar. 22 to May 24 1813 - part of this time (May 3 to 24th) at the Head-of-the-Lake. He served on July 30 and 31, 1813. From Sept. 17 to Oct 24, 1813 he was in the Niagara District. He was 'on command' at Burlington July 4 to 24, 1814. From July 25 to 29, 1814 he was at Burlington Heights where the British military had a fort. The Hamilton Cemetery and Dundurn Castle are located today on the Burlington Heights (2014.) He also served from Nov. 5 to 12, 1814. In total, he served 216 days. After the war, Thomas continued his service with the militia and was promoted to Lieutenant on May 5, 1816. In 1818, Thomas married Mary Flewellan or Flewwelling. He died in Middlesex County in 1864. 'On command' means actively serving and therefore unable to show for roll call during a quarterly muster.
