George Frederick Jelfs (1853 - 1941), who was appointed police magistrate for Hamilton in 1893. Jelfs was born in Sherborne, Dorset, England. The name of this Saxon-Cornish town, which commemorated its 1200th anniversary in 1905, was originally spelled 'Scireburn', and is the source of Jelf's name for his summer house. He immigrated to Hamilton in 1871, accompanied by Lindley Wilton, whose reunion visit with Jelfs in the summer of 1918 provided the occasion for some of the photographs of 'Scire-Burna' in the Jelfs Photograph Album, now preserved in the Hamilton Public Library Local History and Archives. According to Dorothy Turcotte, in The Sand Strip: Probably the best-known resident north of the Canal was Magistrate G.F. Jelfs who built a large white summer home between Station 22 and Station 24. Known to everyone as \"Judge\" Jelfs or simply \"The Judge\", he was an active participant in Beach affairs for many years. In 1907 he was instrumental in defeating an attempt by the City of Hamilton to annex the northern part of the Beach. His house still stands, the first residence north of the Canal.
