The Hamilton Spectator, in a story datelined May 23 (1940) Documented that a Citizens' War-time committee had been selected to form a home guard unit in Burlington: \"Mayor Gordon Blair, Albert Waumsley, fire chief, Harold Eagle, president of the Canadian Legion; Joseph Smith, W. L. Rennie, Lee J. Smith and the following organizers: W. J. Kay, high school students, Harry Mercer, ward one, Thomas Waumsley, ward two, E. W. Mackline, ward three; A. A. Allen, ward four, compose the committee.\" \"The registration of all male residents of Burlington and the nearby district, between the ages of 16 and 60, on a purely voluntary basis\" and registration of guns available for the home guard would be dscussed at \"a mass meeting at the high school on Monday night.... If good weather does not prevail, the meeting will be held in the town hall. \" \" The chairman warned that one of the first duties of the committee would be to avoid acts of violence. On the other hand, the committee must be prepared to take the necessary steps if any trouble is created by subversive elements.\""},{"label":"Contributor","value":"J.
