Little is known of his early personal life other than he arrived in Upper Canada sometime before 1812. During the War of 1812 John enlisted in the militia in the 2nd York Regiment in the 1st Flank Company. He served as issuer and storekeeper in the commissariat department and was in charge of the supply lines along Dundas Street. After the war, he petitioned for a 300 acre land grant. He died of unknown causes in 1826. His twin brother James and younger brother Joseph filed papers asserting rights to the land left unclaimed due to John's untimely death.
