Built circa 1850 at the intersection of the Snake and York Roads, 1631 Snake Road was originally a tavern, built to serve the needs of travellers. The frame building at the side is said to have been the stable for changing horses used in drawing the stagecoaches up the steep incline to Waterdown village. This property was owned by David English from at least 1851. Snake Road, originally a First Nations trail that ran from the western end of Burlington Bay to native camps around Lake Medad, became the main route to the Hamilton Market for the pioneering Farms and Farmingers in East Flamborough Township. In 1853 James Kent Griffin, son of Waterdown entrepreneur Ebenezer Culver Griffin, instituted a number of changes along the five-mile stretch of road that allowed wagon teams to navigate the difficult turns, and set up tollgates to collect tariffs to pay for the improvements he had made. It is believed that there was a tollgate here, but all traces of it have disappeared."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Doreen Schneider"},{"label":"Creator","value":"Doreen Schneider"},{"label":"Date","value":"summer 1974"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1974"},{"label":"Title","value":"1631 Snake Road, 1974"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"1631 Snake Road, 1974","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/bf93f68b-5957-4886-9525-3ace8a97351a/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"1631 Snake Road, 1974","height":235,"width":344,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/bf93f68b-5957-4886-9525-3ace8a97351a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/bf93f68b-5957-4886-9525-3ace8a97351a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":235,"width":344},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/bf93f68b-5957-4886-9525-3ace8a97351a/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/bf93f68b-5957-4886-9525-3ace8a97351a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/bf93f68b-5957-4886-9525-3ace8a97351a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
