Dalton was the son of William Dalton and Elizabeth Sinclair, the first couple married in St Luke's Anglican Church, December 28, 1835. He was born near Burlington on December 25, 1838, emigrated to Iowa in December 1859, bought 80 acres, and later other land. The place was called Canada Hollow because of the large number of Canadian settler. In 1862 William C. Dalton volunteered in the Civil War; in 1867 went back to Canada and married Charlotte Bawtinheimer of Dumfries. In 1876 he bought land near Dalton Lake, Iowa.
