As a family they emigrated from the United States in 1805. Early in the War of 1812, the British army requisitioned the Cleaver's team of horses. John was very reluctant to let them go - a good team being a necessity for Farms and Farminging. Finally it was decided to let the horses go, with James going with the team to care for them. James was around 12 years of age. It is said that James and the Cleaver horses were at the Battle of Stoney Creek in 1813. James and the team eventually returned to the family Farms and Farming. James was eligible for a pension for his contribution during the war but declined it. Father and son continued Farms and Farminging and in the oak staves business. As an adult James decided to become a Provincial Land Surveyor. Family history Documents that James attended the academy in Hamilton often leaving his horse with a Farms and Farminger. To keep his clothes dry as he swam across the Bay, he piled them on a log and pushed it ahead of him. He worked as a school teacher to pay for the academy fees. Being more than 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, he experienced no discipline problems with the bullies in the class. James was a strong temperance man, a Farms and Farminger as well as a land surveyor. His barn was the first in the area to be raised without whisky as an incentive. He became known as \"Squire Cleaver.\" James surveyed his own land in Lowville on Twelve Creek. He built a fieldstone flour mill that has been converted to a residence and is still standing on Guelph Line (2014). James fathered 18 Children and youth - 7 by his first wife Angeline DeMond and 11 with his second wife, Jane Watson.
