Mrs Gilbert's \"Townscape Analysis : A study of the Growth and Urban Renewal Problems in Old Burlington\" does not indicate who commissioned her Document. Her introduction states thatthe Document will consider \"the historical significance of some of the old buildings\", \"the problem of high-rise development in the redevelopment areas\", \"the value of saving some of the old residential and commercial buildings\" , and \"the redevelopment of Brant Street in the form of a [pedestrian] shopping mall\". (p. 1) She expresses regret that \"the historical information on old Burlington is limited\" and recommends a \"much deeper study of the area, through its early residents ... by searching old deeds at the County Registry office, and also through materials available at the Ontario Archives. During Burington's Centennial Year a Committee is working on an updated version of \"From Pathway to Skyway\", presently the best source of information onthe history of Burlington.\" (pp. 1 -2) The Burlington Historical Society published the revised edition, \"From Pathway to Skyway Revisited\", in 1997, following its publication of two books by Dorothy Turcotte, \"Burlington: Memories of Pioneer Days\" in 1989 and \"Burlington: The Growing Years\"in 1992. The Burlington Historical Society Archives includes many records accumulated during decades of research by its members. The abbreviated notes added to Mrs Gilbert's observations made in 1973, reflect the knowledge which has been preserved and recovered during the past 25 years. \"Many of the old buildings still remaining on Brant Street have very few [architectural] features of value to make them worth saving. On the positive side of the picture, these buildings are concrete evidence of the early buildings in the area and thus have some educational value. Educationists are well aware of the difficulty young students have visualizing something shown in picture form, and can gain much from actual concrete materials.
