Filman House The following evaluation is presented in support of the Burlington Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee's judgement that the property located at 851 King Road is worthy of designation under the Ontario Heritage Act. Its evaluation is A. 98 Of Major Significance and clearly worthy of designation. The evaluation is based on criteria designed for the classification of heritage buildings, published in Harold Kalman's The Evaluation of Historic Buildings (Ottawa: Ministry of the Environment, 1980). A designation Document was approved by LACAC in July 1995 and provided to the owner in the summmer of 1995. HISTORY: Lot 1, Concession BF EF (184 acres), was granted by the Crown to George Chisholm in 1802. It was sold in 1843 to Thomas Kirkpatrick, and in 1850 was bought for 1600 by James Conrad Filman. According to Dorothy Turcotte, Memories of Pioneer Days, pp. 72 - 75, the Filman family originated in Germany, where the name was spelled Villeman. They had immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1736, then to Barton Township in 1798, before coming to East Flamborough. James and Nancy Filman had eight Children and youth, including three sets of twins. Their son David inherited the northern half of his father's property in 1889. The Filmans are a significant family in the early history of Aldershot, and several historic Filman houses remain in Burlington (see 689 King Road, built in 1850 or 1870 for James Conrad Filman, and 327 Townsend Avenue, built in 1895 for Joshua Filman). See \"The Filman Family of East Flamboro & Their Historic Houses\", Burlington LACAC (1996). The house is thought to have been built in 1880 for David P. Filman. In the Wentworth Atlas of 1875, the property is shown as belonging to J. C. Filman; only the house now at 689 King Road is shown. In the Imperial Atlas of 1903, the 116-acre property of David P. Filman and this house are shown. 1908 he sold this land and purchased ten acres of market garden from the Lindley family on Maple Avenue. He remodelled the Lindley house there, turning it into a mansion which he called Pine Lodge. (It was demolished in 1987 for development.) When David Filman retired, between 1910 and 1917, he moved to a new house at 544 Locust Street. The 19 February 1908 Gazette Documented that \"Mr Geo. Long has purchased 20 acres of Mr D. P. Filman's Farms and Farming located on King's line, Mr Mann purchasing that part of the Farms and Farming on which the buildings are situated.\" The 1917, 1918 and 1922 telephone directories list Henry Mann as a Fruit grower on Sand Road. According to the Filman family, the Manns continued to live here after 1935. In 1945 the property was sold to Ernest Terry [CHECK} In 1978, owned by Jack & Heather Lowes (BHS survey)"},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor"},{"label":"Date","value":"1880"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1880"},{"label":"Title","value":"851 King Road, Burlington, ON"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"851 King Road, Burlington, ON","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/adfd2e10-fb62-491e-89e9-b4e16cbbd6a3/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"851 King Road, Burlington, ON","height":1064,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/adfd2e10-fb62-491e-89e9-b4e16cbbd6a3/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/adfd2e10-fb62-491e-89e9-b4e16cbbd6a3","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1064,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/adfd2e10-fb62-491e-89e9-b4e16cbbd6a3/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/adfd2e10-fb62-491e-89e9-b4e16cbbd6a3/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/adfd2e10-fb62-491e-89e9-b4e16cbbd6a3/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
