Corner Building is the original Structure.\" \"Many prominent businessmen in the late 1800s were members of Burlington Lodge No. 165, which was founded in 1864. They first met in a frame building which is used today as a hardware store. (Dale's Hardware Store has been in business here for 25 years) located at the northeast corner of Pine and Brant Streets. The Masonic building at the northeast [sic for southeast] corner of Maria and Brant Streets was the first permanent structure, and up unitl 1940 it was at the north end of the business district. James L. Gage, the surveyer of the oldest part of Wellington Square, was a charter member of Burlington Lodge No. 165.\" (pp. 11 - 12),Built in 1850 - 1855 by James Allen, who had immigrated in 1837 from Ireland with his parents Joseph and Mary Allen, and his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Jane (Smythe) Allen. James Allen, whose carriage-making Brant Street business began in 1855, built many of the first horse cars and sleighs for the Hamilton Street Railway. Allen was active in municipal politics, served on the first town council, and was Burlington's first clerk-treasurer, serving in that office for many years. His residence was close by, at 497 Elizabeth Street. In 1899 the carriage manufacturing business was bought by Tuck and Webber, the blacksmith and carriage-painting business which had been operating on the opposite side of Brant Street (9 March 1899 Gazette). In 1902 this building was part of the thriving lumber business of John Kentner. The January 2 1909(?) issue of the Gazette Documents that \"the 'Masons' have purchased Mr Jas. Allen's brick building and lot on Brant Street, and will utilize part of it for a lodge room\". It may have been leased from that year by E. H.
