Photograph only"},{"label":"Description","value":"Con 1 EF, Pt Lt 3 1907 A. 77 East Plains United Church and Cemetery ARCHITECTURE: Simple front-gabled structure clad with stretcher-bond brick. Entrances have projected ends with concrete parapet at the gable line. Entrance doors with pointed Gothic arches have transoms with muntin tracings over heavy oak double leaf doors. HISTORY: East Plains United is the oldest congregation in this area. It is believed that services began in a log building, perhaps the home of Aaron and Jane (Van Norman) Emery. They purchased land from the Fongers. Emery was church superintendent for 26 years. In 1793 Harcar Lyons and his wife Marcy Peers, widow of Thomas Roseborough, immigrated from New Jersey, and petitioned for a land grant in East Flamboro. In 1838 Harcar's will bequeathed Con 1 Lot 3, and 50 acres on the west side of BF Lot 3 to one of his sons, Joseph. In 1843 Joseph Lyons gave land for the building of the original church, and built it \"mostly at his own expence\", according to his memorial stone. According to the WI Tweedsmuir scrapbook, East and West Plains Churches were built one mile each side of the crossroads at Aldershot. The 1843 frame structure was then owned by H. Poelman. A second church was built in 1892. It was destroyed by fire in 1907 and the present church was built that same year. The 9 October 1907 Gazette: announced that the opening of the new Methodist church at Aldershot would be on 27 October. The 6 November 1907 Gazette Documented on the openeing and dedication of East Plains Methodist Church. It was built on the same foundation, \"out of the ashes\" of the earlier structure. The brick, stone, and plaster work was done by Stephen Carey of Burlington. 1935 Plan of the Kings Highway in the township of Flamboro East: United Church of Canada. The cemetery includes 168 recorded monuments, the earliest being a monument for Dunnie, son of E. B. and E. J. Emory, born 1822, died 1829. ENVIRONMENT: Adequate parking is at the side and rear. Fast food outlets are on the other sides. Mature trees and attractive landscaping enhance the church. USABILITY: . INTEGRITY: Well maintained. BHS notes have 376 Plains Road East (Con BF EF Pt Lt 3) as built c. 1889 for W. A. Emory. This may be \"The Orchards\", \"Residence of W. A. Emory, Aldershot\", illustrated on p. 74 of The Garden of Canada. The Emery / Emory/ Hummerich history is summarized in Turcotte. Or it may be \"Orchard Villa\", the residence of D. Hall, Esq, Aldershot, illustrated on p. 72 of The Garden of Canada. According to an early LACAC audio tape, it is located south of Jaggard's Florist and has new siding and windows. The 15 November 1905 Gazette Documented in the Aldershot column that \"Mr David Hall [had] purchased property of Mrs P. Bowden\". ARCHITECTURE: The original house known as Orchard Villa was a two-storey end-gabled frame structure with clapboard siding and 6/6 windows. From the illustration it appears to have a three-bay front elevation, with bay windows and an elaborately decorated porch at the central entrance. The upper level front windows are almost just below the eaves. On the west elevation, two windows at each level.
