Designed by Hamilton architect Charles Mills and built in 1906-1907 on the west side of Brant Street, south of Ontario Street. Its construction was funded by a $1000 donation by John Waldie, Burlington's first Reeve and former Member of Parliament. Waldie had moved to Toronto after the death in 1884 of his wife Mary Ann (and the mother of their 13 Children and youth), following childbirth. As the founder of the Victoria Harbour Lumber Company, Waldie became immensely wealthy, building a Rosedale mansion for his family, but he did not forget Burlington. On opening day, the new library was stocked with 6,000 books, purchased by Waldie. He also gave books to all 13 School Sections in Nelson, imported 12 stained-glass windows for Knox Presbyterian Church, and donated to the village the land for the non-denominational Greenwood Cemetery. The Library was demolished for the construction of a new Town Hall in 1964.,The \"Souvenir Folder / containing / 16 Photographic Views / of / Burlington, Ont.\" reproduced 16 postcards, which were also sold separately. Both the folder and the individual postcards could be mailed to friends in Canada using a one cent stamp."},{"label":"Date","value":"ca 1918"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1918"},{"label":"Title","value":"Souvenir Folder, Public Library, Brant Street, ca 1918"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Souvenir Folder, Public Library, Brant Street, ca 1918","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ab863135-ab72-4f69-ad55-7506f28d205b/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Souvenir Folder, Public Library, Brant Street, ca 1918","height":1000,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ab863135-ab72-4f69-ad55-7506f28d205b/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ab863135-ab72-4f69-ad55-7506f28d205b","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1000,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ab863135-ab72-4f69-ad55-7506f28d205b/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ab863135-ab72-4f69-ad55-7506f28d205b/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/ab863135-ab72-4f69-ad55-7506f28d205b/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
