What we do know is, he was an early settler in Nelson Township. In the 1806 land draw, he drew Lot 6 Con 1 SDS (2014; between Dundas Street and Upper Middle Road along Appleby Line). He enlisted on 10 or 11 May 1811 and took the oath of loyalty that officers had to take on Apr. 4 1812. On June 4, 1812 he was selected as a lieutenant in the 2nd York Regiment. He served from Sept. 25 - Dec. 20, 1812. In 1813 he was at the Head-of-the-Lake May 3 to 24; he served June 6 to 9th and was employed from Sept. 21 to Oct 24 in building the barracks at Burlington Heights, where the British Military had decided to build a fort. Hamilton Cemetery and Dundurn Castle are located on Burlington Heights (2014). In 1814, he was at Hutes Huas near St. David's July 4 to 24th and at Burlington Heights July 25 to 29, and served one more week in Nov. 1814, from Nov. 5 to 12. On 5 May 1816, he was recommended for a promotion to Captain. After the war, Thomas made a land claim and received a Prince Regent's Land Grant. (Grants of land awarded to officers who served in the War of 1812. Also known as Prince Rupert's Bounty.) In 1839, Thomas sold his property in Nelson Township and moved to Oakville.
