Ciag Insurance, formerly John Waldie & Co., established c. 1870 (displays curved Victorian dormers and firewalls often found in older buildings.\" \"Waldie's Dry Goods, Hardware and Grocery Syore, at the corner of John and Water Streets, was renovated in 1966 to serve as three retail outlets. In recent years the building has also served as a Brewers' Retail Outlet and as an Automobile Showroom. ... The condition of the exterior of the building suggests that renovations of the interior and the street level of the building is not enough. The brick above Ciag Insurance shows signs of deterioration, and in its present condition displays little of the architectural history that could be displayed by total restoration. As one of the oldest commercial stuctures in Burlington it should be worth saving, but for most of today's residents it has very little sentimental value, or little historical value. Only a small percentage of town [residents] have lived in Burlington long enough to have much interest in its history.\" (p. 8),Built in 1865 for John Waldie for his General Store. Waldie was one of Burlington's greatest entrepreneurs and benefactors. The following note is adapted from the entry on him in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography online: His business career was begun at Burlington, Halton County, as a merchant, and he was also interested in the shipping industry which at that time was of great importance. Throughout his life he was very fond of Burlington, the scene of his early victories in trade, and he remembered the village in many practical and pleasant ways by valuable gifts in later years, all given in his own quiet and unostentatious way. He was Reeve of Burlington for five years: Reeve of Nelson Township for two years; sat for Halton in the Dominion Parliament from 1887 to 1891 as a Liberal in opposition, and figured in four elections in that constituency. In 1885 he moved to Toronto and began to devote the greater part of his energies to the lumber business. He was a specialist in white pine, the increasing value of which was the making of his fortune. He founded the Victoria Harbour Lumber Company; his son Frederick Norval Waldie (1875 - 1927) succeeded him as president of this company. At John Waldie's death in 1907 (at his mansion Glenhurst in Rosedale, Toronto) he owned a number of lumber and tanning companies and was president of the Landed Banking and Loan Company of Hamilton (where he was a partner with the Mills Brothers in developing Locke Street, etc.), a director of the Bank of Toronto, and of the Toronto Paper Coating Mills. John Waldie is not a forgotten man in Canadian history, although Mrs Gilbert may have been correct to write that he was forgotten by most Burlington residents in 1973.,43.3249,-79.7953"},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Mrs Barbara J.
