Photograph only"},{"label":"Description","value":"lan 65, Pt Lts 52, 53 1868-78 B. 58 I 97 The former Rusby butcher shop relocated from Brant Street HISTORY: Iin 1874 Lot 53 was sold by James Eager to Leonard James Rusby; 1908 mortgage. According to Stanley Blair, the former Rusby butcher shop on Brant Street was in a semi-detached building which was moved to Brock Street and divided. A BHS note dates the structures to 1878. The Brant Street location in 1906 is illustrated in From Pathway to Skyway, p. 157. The structures were moved from Brant Street to Brant Avenue in 1908. The 11 March 1908 Gazette Documented that \" Mr Bert Rusby, one of our local butchers, is making preparations to build an up to date store on his property. The present building will be removed to his lot on Ontario st., and on the site will be erected a substantial brick building. He expects to have it ready for occupancy by May 14th.\" The 6 May 1908 Gazette Documented that \"The frame building used as a meat shop by Mr Bert Rusby has been removed and the work of building the other store has commenced.\" The house at 1298 Ontario Street (near the corner of Brock Avenue) was built in 1876 for Leonard Rusby. According to From Pathway to Skyway, pp. 159 - 160, Leonard Rusby established his meat market in 1868, advertising \"the most reasonable prices with honest weights and measures always quoted\". His son Albert Edward Rusby continued the business, located north of Le Patourel's Drug Store on the east side of the first block of Brant Street. When Leonard built the house next door at 1292 Ontario Street in 1908, his son stayed in the older house. Rusby, Lot 52 1919 Voters List: Leonard Rusby (retired) Gentleman, Russell Rusby, Laborer, Ontario St. 1922 Telephone Directory: Russell Rusby, residence, Brant Ave. 1927 Voters List: Russell Rusby, Motorman, and Myrtle Rusby, M[arried] W[oman], part lot 53, Brant Ave. Rusby, Russell E.C. and Mackay, Myrtle, Marriage notice, Burlington Gazette, 13 Dec 1911, page 1 , column 4 Russell Rusby, who lived at 490 Brock Avenue, was a radial car operator and bus driver from 1919 to 1928. The Radial Line from Hamilton to Oakville stopped at chalets at Smith Lane, Guelph Line, Pine Cove, Walkers Line, and Bronte. The car barns were where Lions Park is. The trams reached speeds of 60 to 65 mph. Mary Robson (2006): Russell drove a bus for Canada Coach Lines, Hamilton. Russell and Myrtle Rusby had a daughter, Gwen, who married Cliff Ingleby and lived in a house on Maple Avenue, opposite the Ironside house on the coner of Lockhart Road, which was rented from Renton \"Rennie\" Bridgman, a Farms and Farminger. In 1945 from the executors of Albert Edward Rusby to A. S. Nicholson & Warren A. Nicholson. ARCHITECTURE: Now two one-and-a-half-storey front-gabled frame cottages. ENVIRONMENT: USABILITY: Residential use. Perhaps being held for redevelopment. Robert Young, who owns 492 Brock, is said also to own the empty lot beside it. Both lots have been for sale in March 1995, February 1998, etc.... ?? INTEGRITY: Replacement windows and doors, apparently relocated. Aluminum storm windows and doors. Replacement siding.
