Matthews, connected tohis Brant Street Brick store. 1917 and 1918 Telephone Directories: John T. Matthews, hardware, Brant (also a branch at Freeman); res. Brant Park 1919 Voters List: J. T. Mathhews, Hardware, Part Lot 1, Brant 1922 Telephone Directory: John T. Matthews, Hardware, Brant, res. Water. According to From Pathway to Skyway Revisited, p. 193, John T. Matthews had a hardware store in 1909, which became Haswell's Home Furnishings at 421 Brant Street (later Brant Cycle and Sports). Jack Matthews had another hardware store at Freeman on the east side of Brant Street near Plains Road. ARCHITECTURE: A two-storey flat-roofed structure, now stuccoed. The second level has two groups of three windows, asymmetrically placed.The lower level has been altered. One door leads to the upper level. ENVIRONMENT: In 1994 this property was vacant and contributing to the Downtown blight. The new owner transformed its appearance and usefulness. USABILITY: Adapted for a more viable commercial use.
