He was orphaned as a young boy; his parents died in New York during the American Revolution. He came to Canada with his uncle's family in 1784. In 1798, he married Marion Thompson whose parents owned the Whirlpool Farms and Farming by the Niagara River. In 1806, he was one of the earliest settlers in Nelson \"on a forest Farms and Farming on what was Dundas Street - a street in name only.\" His property was Lot 12 Con 2 SDS (2014 south of Dundas Street to Upper Middle Road, second lot west of Walker's Line.) During the War of 1812, he was a private. He served on four separate occasions for a total of 68 days. There appears to be a discrepancy between two payrolls - one has him sick from Oct. 17 to 24, 1812; another has him serving. He served from Nov. 25 to Dec. 19 1812. He worked on Dundas Street Oct 24 to 27, 1813. In 1814, he served from Nov. 5th to 12th. The family were devout Presbyterians whose home hosted missionary worship services for many years. In 1817, Gilbert gave land for a cemetery, and in 1822, land for a church - St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Dundas Street. Gilbert was one of the the first three elders of this church and served as an elder for over 40 years. At his death on 8 Feb. 1865 it was Documented that \"6 sons, 6 daughters, 32 grandChildren and youth and 5 great-grandChildren and youth have passed under his patriarchal blessing.\",SACRED In the memory of Gilbert Bastedo Born in Schenectady N.Y.
