The family then moved to the Head-of-the-Lake on land adjoining Joseph Brant's. In this sparsely settled wilderness the Chisholm brothers learned to speak the Mohawk language. In May of 1812 William married Rebecca Silverthorn. In Aug. of 1812 he was fighting as an Ensign with the 2nd York Regiment, Militia, at the capture of Detroit. Later he was awarded a General Service Medal for his service at Detroit. In Oct. 1812, he fought at Queenston Heights along with his father and brothers, John and George Jr. Two months later he was promoted to Lieutenant. The Battle of Lundy's Lane in 1814 was the last action in which he participated. When the war was over, William Chisholm became a leading merchant in the village of Hannahsville (later named Nelson) at Guelph Line and Dundas Street. In 1820 he was elected to the House of Assembly representing Halton. He was also elected in 1830 and 1836 - but lost in 1834 and 1841. He became Postmaster of the second post office on Dundas Street between the capital York (Toronto) and the Village of Dundas. He owned a shipyard on Burlington Bay and by 1827 owned five sailing vessels. He was appointed a commissioner for the construction of the Burlington Bay Canal, and later commissioner of the Welland Canal. He recognized the potential of the natural harbour at Sixteen Mile Creek. When it came up for auction in 1827 he was the successful in his bid for the 960 acre lot. Besides working on the harbour and a shipping business, he built a warehouse to hold the produce prior to shipping. He built a tavern, sawmill, and gristmill. He was appointed Collector of Customs and Postmaster. He became the founder of Oakville. He died 4 May 1842.
