Around 1799 the family moved to Upper Canada settling on the Canadian side of Lake Erie near Elizabeth's family. While there he was converted to the Wesleyan Methodist faith; \"converted\" meaning \"publicly declaring his intention to participate in the Methodist faith.\" He became a well-known lay preacher. His home was open for prayer meetings and visiting preachers including Egerton Ryerson (a Methodist minister, educator, politician and advocate of public education). Around 1805, he married Maria Catharina Cummings, a sister of his brother Joseph's wife. The 1806 map of Nelson shows him living on Lot 4 Con 3 SDS - the second lot east of Appleby Line between the QEW and Lakeshore Road (2014). As soon as he had cleared some of his land and had some crops planted, he built a sawmill. He tanned leather to make shoes, was his own blacksmith, cooper, brick maker, and cabinetmaker. As well as a preacher and a self-sufficient pioneer, he was also known as a healer and was often called to a sickbed when a qualified medical man was not available. During the War of 1812, he was a private and served seven days in Dec. 1813, from the 7th to 13th. Isaac and Catharina had twelve Children and youth - most of them having Old Testament names. When his one-year-old daughter died there was no Methodist cemetery. He chose a small hillside near his home for the internment. This was the start of the Mount Vernon Cemetery. This cemetery can still be found on Harvester Road, behind a strip mall opposite the GO Station parking lot. In 1837, he sold one-half acre of his land to the Wesleyan Methodist church for a chapel and cemetery. The church continues as Appleby United Church on Spruce Street. After the death of his first wife, in 1844 he married Catherine Everett. He died on 15 Feb. 1877 age 93 and is buried in his cemetery - Mount Vernon.,??? Isaac Van Norman ???
