According to Turcotte, Memories of Pioneer Days, p. 200, the Torrance house on the west side of the street was built by George Blair for William Graham, who sold it to Mr [Daniel?] Torrance when he came from Montreal, and the Torrance family lived there for several years. Torrance headed a Montreal based company in Burlington and developed land and business. Plan 87 was registered by M. Torrance in 1889. Sold in 1889 by Charles and Caroline Torrance to Edward Williamson, a builder. Sold in 1894 to John Wilson Henderson for $200. 1897 Voters List: J. W. Henderson, Bailiff, Lot 7, Elizabeth 1902-1902 Assessment Roll: Charles Taylor, painter, age 57, Torrance St, lot 95, 4.5 acres, House, $1200; Frederick Taylor, clerk, age 25, Charles Taylot, Clerk, age 22. 1 dog, 7 bitches, Presbyterian [?], 1.? acre orchard & garden [?] 1903 Assessment Roll: Charles Taylor Sr, Painter, age 52, Frederick Taylor, Clerk, age 26, and Charles Taylor Jr, Clerk, age 23, Torrance St, Lot 95 The 10 April 1907 Gazette included the notice: ÔÇ£FOR SALE - property of Charles Taylor, head of Torrance street, 3 acres - good house, barn [etc]ÔÇØ. The 8 May 1907 Gazette Documented that J. W. Henderson ÔÇª has sold the Taylor property on Torrance street to Mr Hiram Norton of Bronte, will take immediate possession.ÔÇØ Sold in 1907 to Elizabeth & Hiram C. Norton, mortgage for $1300. The 12 April 1911 Gazette Documented that Mr J. H. Cole of Delhi, Ohio, had purchased two lots on Torrance and had moved into town, living in Mr F. W. GallowayÔÇÖs house on Pearl Street ÔÇô ÔÇ£will erect a new house on his property this summerÔÇØ. The 10 May 1911 Gazette Documented that Mr H. Cuttriss had the contract to build J. H. ColeÔÇÖs new house on Torrance Street. 1915 Voters List: J. H. Cole, Gentleman, Lots 2 to 7, Torrance 1919 Voters List: John Cole, Gentleman, Lots 3 to 7, Torrance 1927 Voters List: Emma Cole, Spinster, Lot 7, 7 Water 1932 Burlington Directory: Miss Emma Cole, Owner, 59 Water ARCHITECTURE: A large two-and-a-half storey structure clad with stretcher-bond brick. The truncated hip roof has an offset gable above a two-storey projection. The pedimented gable with returns has a Palladian type window. The first and second level front doors are angled on to the two-level verandah with a boxed cornice and dentil decorated fascia supported by Doric columns, with good turned newel posts and balustrades on both levels. All windows have segmental heads with radiating voussoirs and stone sills. Main windows have leaded glass panels and the front door also has leaded glass. The interior has original features: bevelled and leaded framing (?), marble and carved wood mantel, and oak staircase. ENVIRONMENT: USABILITY: INTEGRITY: Replacement windows (with sliders).
